Strawberry season is nearly here

Our strawberry season is nearly upon us.

The plants are full of little white flowers, most are heavy with green strawberries, with a few of the plants producing red fruit so far. Unfortunately this isn't anywhere near sufficient for you - the public - to come and pick.

We expect that we will have fields full of ripe fruit in about 2 weekends time, being 30 September and 1 October. The phone has been ringing off the hook with people enquiring if our season has started and if they can come through and pick strawberries - NOT YET PEOPLE, a little more patience is required, Mother Nature takes her time.

The last while, we have been furiously clearing the fields of the weeds, cleaning up walkways, patching up leaks in irrigation systems, creating better compost heaps, dealing with the odd fire from next door and not to forget constant watering. This season, we have planted an additional 4 fields worth of strawberry plants to try to cope with the masses that come through. Last year, on average, we were picked out on Saturdays by around 2pm!!! We had more fields available to pick in, with a lot more plants to pick from and yet, the sheer number of people that came through to us on a Saturday morning was overwhelming.

We have made productive changes to the fields this year, 4 extra fields, more compost and a better watering regime. This should all contribute to a better season, with a lot more strawberries to pick. Production last year was estimated at about 8 tonnes of strawberries - this is worked out through what we harvest for ourselves, the number of people through the fields and what gets sold as people leave the fields. This year is going to be even better, with the expectation of breaking the 10 tonne mark, should be closer to 12 tonnes.

A friendly reminder:

Our season should last until early December.

We get swamped the first few weekends.

Get here early on a Saturday as it is "first come, first served", we do not take bookings over weekends for picking.

The public is only allowed to pick on weekends, arrive midweek and you're likely to be turned away.

Your picking entrance fee covers you going into the fields, picking and eating there only - strawberries taken out are charged at the going rate. (unlike other places that charge you an entrance fee, give you a punnet/container, and that is all that you are allowed to pick - no eating in their fields allowed)

You can go into the fields as many times in the day, that you have paid your entrance fee for, as you wish, strawberry availability permitting.

We reserve the right to limit strawberries being taken out of the fields.

We cannot, at anytime, guarantee the availability of strawberries. We do not know how many people will get to our farm before you, nor will we know how much they will eat before you get here. If you call us during the week leading up to your visit, we will more than likely inform you that there will be strawberries for that weekend, if we say that, it means there will strawberries for picking at 7:30 am on the Saturday morning, after that, we will not know.

If you wish to go into our fields, we will charge you entrance, whether it is to have a quick look, or possibly eat your weight in strawberries - entrance fee allows you entry into the fields.

We close at 4 pm, as in the farm is not open for the public after 4 pm. If you are picnicking, please pack up at 4, to be off the farm by 4:30 pm. No entry to the fields will be allowed after 4 pm, people in the fields my please start making their way out of the fields at 4 pm.

For further information, please visit our strawberry picking page.

We look forward to having you join us on the farm.

See you soon
